Dr. Zoran Filipi

Professor Zoran Filipi is a Professor and Timken Endowed Chair in Vehicle System Design since 2012, and the Director of the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, Clemson University, since 2022. In addition, Dr. Filipi serves as the Founding Director of the center for Virtual Prototyping of autonomy-enabled Ground Systems (VIPR-GS).

Prior to the current posts, he was the Chair of the Automotive Engineering located on the CUICAR campus in Greenville, SC for seven years. Dr. Filipi was with the University of Michigan between 1994 and 2011, where he rose to the rank of Research Professor, and served as the Director of the Center for Engineering Excellence through Hybrid Technology and the Deputy Director of the Automotive Research Center.

Professor Filipi received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Belgrade in 1992. His main research interests are vehicular propulsion systems, including alternative and hybrid powertrains, advanced IC engine concepts, novel combustion modes, heat transfer, and energy for transportation. He developed numerous industry collaborations in the propulsion area, with major OEMs such as General Motors, Stellantis and Daimler Trucks, Tier 1 suppliers such as Bosch-Anderson, BorgWarner and Bosch-Rexroth Hydraulics, and technology innovation companies such as Achates Power, EcoDual and Aramco Engineering.

Dr. Filipi published over 230 papers in international journals and refereed conference proceedings and holds three patents. He is an ASME Fellow, SAE Fellow, member of the SAE Executive Committee for Powertrains, and Editor-In-Chief emeritus of the SAE International Journal of Alternative Powertrain.

Awards received by Dr. Filipi include the SAE Forest R. McFarland Award, the IMechE Donald Julius Groen Award, IMechE Journal of Automobile Engineering Best Paper Award, Springer Award for the most cited article in the Int. Journal of Automotive Technology, and the U of M Research Faculty Achievement Award.
